To fix it enter, stty erase ^?

Windows

1. Select the Command Prompt window where the program is running.
2. Click the uppermost left corner of the Command Prompt window. The drop-down menu is displayed.
3. Select the Properties option.
4. Select the Layout tab, and change the height value in Screen Buffer Size to 3000.
5. To create the thread dump

   Press the Ctrl+Break keys. The thread dump is generated and displayed in the command window.

   Scroll back in the command window until you reach the beginning of the dump “Full thread dump:”

6. Save all the text that follows “Full thread dump:” to a text file.

UNIX

There are two ways to create a thread dump on a Unix computer. 

1. By copying the thread dump from your shell window

2. By redirecting the standard out (stdout) of the java command to a file. When you send a SIGQUIT signal to the java process, a thread dump is sent to the stdout.

In a shell, other than the shell where the program is running, find the java process ID using the ps command.

Send the java process a SIGQUIT signal:
$ kill -3 pidm, where pid is the java process ID. This sends the thread dump to stdout.

1. Start Button / Run / gpedit.msc
2. Select /local computer policy/computer configuration/administrative templates/windows components/windows update
3. - then pick ‘re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations’ and edit the properties.  Enable it and change it to 120…and voila! … you’re now reminded every 2 hours instead of 10 minutes.

Pidgin Instant Messenger is a great chat client, but it’s susceptible to spam messages – most recently from MSN and it’s driving me mad!  

To fix this you need to install a spambot plugin, such as this bot-sentry.  It works by asking the sender a message and matches the reply to what you define as the answer.  If they get it right then they can message you…. but when they’re a zombie spambot they can’t answer the question, and so voila!  Problem solved.

1. Select Tools/Preferences/Advanced Tab/Browsing and change ‘Loading’ to ‘Redraw instantly’;

2. Select Tools/Preferences/Advanced Tab/Network an increase ‘Max connections to a server’ to 20, and ‘Max total connections’ to 128.  I’ve found that some websites don’t respond well if you go above 20 max connections to a server.  I guess they think they’re under a DDOS attack or something.  Play around until you find a happy compromise.

edit:  after a few months of use, I’m now settling down with slightly modified performance parameters, ie: Redraw is now set to ‘Redraw after 2 seconds’, and ‘Max connections to a server’ is set to 16.

In IE and Firefox you’ll see the little flag move or the mozilla logo spin which tells you that they’re trying to retrieve your page, but how do you tell in Opera?

Well, you will notice that the ‘refresh’ icon will have changed to a red X.. implying you can stop it from currently retrieving the page, but what you can also do is make a quick preference change to get more information.

Click on Tools/Appearance/Toolbars and you’ll see a ‘Progress Bar’ setting.  Change that to ‘Show inside address bar’ and click OK.  Now you’ll see how much of the page has been retrieved, how many elements of total elements it’s expecting, in addition to the speed at which the remote server is sending you the page data.
